Generations of readers, both Jewish and non-Jewish, have loved these classic stories about five sisters who live with their parents in New York at the turn of the 20th century. Together they share adventures, holidays, and customs that show an immigrant family remaining Jewish while becoming American. Other books in the series include More All-of-a-Kind Family, All-of-a-Kind Family Uptown, All-of-a-Kind Family Downtown, and Ella of All-of-a-Kind Family. The importance of these books in the development of American Jewish children’s literature is recognized by the Association of Jewish Libraries, which names both its children’s book award and its manuscript for unpublished books in Sydney Taylor’s memory.
