This supernatural crime fiction tale by the father-son Kellerman team is a fascinating sequel to The Golem of Hollywood. Detective Jacob Lev is a hard-drinking malcontent who has been reassigned to a lonely desk job. He recently found his mother who he’d thought was dead, and stopped communicating with his father for whom he blames his mother’s situation. Lev has been contacted by some strange Special Projects personnel who work for a mysterious LAPD division. He has also experienced a few encounters with Mai, an evanescent female figure he might have only dreamt about. This story takes place in California, Brooklyn, Prague, Israel, and Paris, with the detective learning details about his mother’s hidden past while pursuing a possible cross Atlantic serial killer. of course there is also a golem involved with all the history related to that ungodly clay monster. This Kellerman collaboration is a suspenseful page turner dealing with family relations, work politics, issues of trust, loyalty, religious belief, love and faith. This reader had much to think about long after the story’s end.
