Many journalists who come to the Middle East write books, attempting to solve the age-old problems of the region without fully understanding the complex issues involved.

Matt Rees, Times bureau chief in Jerusalem, goes to great lengths to understand the historical development of the issues. He looks at the issues not only historically but also religiously and culturally. As he uncovers the past conflicts over a land claimed by both Israel and the Palestinians, he begins to unveil why it is so difficult to find a resolution.

Cain’s Field is a realistic and insightful work that tries to make sense out of a nearly insoluble conundrum.
