In 1917, on New York City’s Lower East Side, Baruch Rosenfeld, following Jewish tradition, invites a beggar to join his family for the Passover Seder. Baruch is unaware that the beggar is actually a master of traditional Jewish magic who punishes the Rosenfelds by trapping them in a time bubble. The family doesn’t age, can’t leave their three-room apartment, and the outside world believes they disappeared without a trace.
A century later, the apartment building is now the Tenement Museum. Esther Luna, a museum educator, sees Baruch’s young daughter, Sadie, at the window. Presuming Sadie, a trespasser, Esther goes to the apartment but finds it empty. She hires Rabbi Meir Poppers to solve the mystery of the girl at the window.
Poppers’ efforts to free the Rosenfelds are blocked by rivals, ancient spells, and his self-doubt. When he finally reaches the trapped family, he must make decisions that will change their lives forever. Will Poppers’ own brand of Jewish magic rescue the Rosenfelds from their eternal prison?
