Join author and illus­tra­tor Madi­son Safer in con­ver­sa­tion with artist, author, and illus­tra­tor Suzy Ult­man to cel­e­brate the pub­li­ca­tion of Safer’s new pic­ture book, The Gar­lic Eaters (Some­where / Ayin Press, 2026).

Root­ed in Jew­ish expe­ri­ences of dias­po­ra, The Gar­lic Eaters is a sto­ry for young read­ers about home, loss, and what it means to belong. Through­out his­to­ry, gar­lic has fol­lowed Jew­ish com­mu­ni­ties — tucked into pock­ets, hung on doors, and shared with neigh­bors. Writer and artist Madi­son Safer weaves that his­to­ry into a tale of Yid­dish imag­i­na­tion and ten­der­ness, intro­duc­ing young read­ers to the uni­ver­sal expe­ri­ence of start­ing over some­where new — and find­ing, against all odds, a com­mu­ni­ty to call your own.

Madi­son and Suzy will talk about weav­ing Judaism into con­tem­po­rary illus­tra­tion and children’s books; how fam­i­ly, food, lan­guage, and tra­di­tion find their way into their work; and what it means to cre­ate dis­tinct­ly Jew­ish art for a con­tem­po­rary audi­ence. They’ll also dis­cuss visu­al sto­ry­telling, the strange and won­der­ful process of mak­ing books, and, nat­u­ral­ly, gar­lic. The con­ver­sa­tion will be mod­er­at­ed by artist Jes­si­ca Tamar Deutsch, with an audi­ence Q&A to follow.
