Her book Yid­dish: A Nation of Words won a Nation­al Jew­ish Book Award, and her book The Sur­pris­ing Pow­er of Fam­i­ly Meals opened an impor­tant inter­na­tion­al con­ver­sa­tion. She has spo­ken about her books on three con­ti­nents. She has writ­ten a blog on grand­moth­er­ing for Parade​.com. She is a for­mer syn­a­gogue pres­i­dent.
