According to Isaac is an imaginative retelling of the enigmatic Abraham/Isaac story from Genesis 22, in which God tells Abraham to make a burnt offering of the son he loves. In this version, Isaac is the storyteller. He is a happy, somewhat naive, somewhat insecure, somewhat irreverent thirteen-year-old who becomes an unknowing participant in this existential drama. As Abraham, Isaac, and two slaves trek across the harsh Judean desert, they encounter several twists and turns, some life-threatening, and experience moments of true bonding. But it isn’t until the climactic moments, when Abraham binds Isaac to the altar, that Isaac fully realizes the fate that awaits him. As they return home, Isaac’s faith in his father and in God has been shaken. He left his village a naive boy. He returns home a man. Many years later, he returns to Moriah with his own sons and understands that it is faith that ultimately survives.
