Paul Hart­man, com­ing of age in post­war Rock­away, grows up haunt­ed by the specter of his cousin Max, an Asuch­witz sur­vivor, and Max’s mys­te­ri­ous cache of dia­monds, which fund Paul’s Har­vard Law edu­ca­tion — and his fianc — e’s engage­ment ring.
