Here is the second beautiful book about the Abayudaya Jewish community in Uganda by an award-winning author who grew up in it.

As she did in her first book about Shoshi, Shoshana Nambi poignantly and elegantly describes what it is like to be a young girl in the Abayudaya community. With clear text, accompanied by richly colored evocative illustrations, she shows us what it is like to prepare for Shabbat in her childhood home. We meet family members and experience the conduct of their coffee business as well as watching them prepare for Shabbat amid a busy, full, and productive life. Shoshi learns that Shabbat is a time for slowing down and appreciating the beauty of the environment, family, and Jewish tradition. Readers get a detailed look into a world that might be far from their own, but is nevertheless filled with similar values. Soshi’s world is one of love, beauty, enjoyment, and appreciation for all that one has.

A short appendix tells us more about the Abayudaya community and the ways it has changed with the times. A useful glossary of terms is included as well.
