Michal Govrin is a superb stylist who can capture an entire world with her descriptions.
Snapshots jumps in, out, and all around three very different places: Jerusalem, Paris, and New Jersey. In each locale the author describes life and culture, love and frustration, showing us what it’s like to live in each place. Accompanying each jump to a site is a literal snapshot of the place.
Well received when it was published in Hebrew in 2002, the English translation captures the aura, passion, and tension of the original work. Even the comparisons from city to city to city work well and are filled with vibrancy and life. The book’s translator, Barbara Harshav, clearly heard the voice of author Michal Govrin and understood her imagery.
