In 1980s L.A., Bonnie, a Jewish psychologist, marries Bob, a charismatic Hollywood comedy writer whose fundamentalist Christian childhood has left him with sexual shame. Their secular marriage is passionate and deep but marred by power struggles over different sexual needs. Sometimes it’s fun. Other times Bonnie is ashamed of surrendering to Bob’s sexual requests. Bonnie wonders: How does one reconcile deep love with unresolvable conflict? How am I contributing to the problems? Should I have married a Jewish man as my parents wished? Bonnie and Bob delight in each other, but sometimes when she refuses to indulge him sexually, they fight. Eventually they create mutual peace, but sadly after 33 years together, Bob dies. As Bonnie grieves, she gains some powerful insights, including how much Bob was like her mother — adoring, talented and hilarious, but also too controlling. Bonnie’s professional knowledge woven through her marital experience creates a compelling story about powerful unconscious motivations that influence our choices. Her personal journey will inspire readers to see their own relationships in a new light.
