Join Daniela Gerson and Nicholas Lemann in a conversation with Stephanie Butnick rooted in finding your place in the world after war or tragedy – who are you when you’ve been uprooted, and how do you find a home in a world now foreign to you?
Daniela Gerson is an award-winning reporter whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Der Spiegel, Public Radio International, and the Financial Times, among other outlets. An associate professor of journalism at California State University, Northridge and editor-at-large at Zócalo Public Square, she previously worked as a community engagement editor at the LA Times and as a staff immigration reporter for the New York Sun. She has also directed programs at the intersection of civic engagement and news representation for the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School and the City University of New York’s Newmark School.
Nicholas Lemann is a professor and dean emeritus at the Columbia Journalism School. He is the author of The Promised Land, The Big Test, Redemption, and Transaction Man. A staff writer for The New Yorker since 1999, he lives in New York.
Stephanie Butnick is the founder of the Jewish lifestyle newsletter GOLDA. She previously hosted the hit Tablet podcast Unorthodox and co-authored The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia: From Abraham to Zabar’s and Everything in Between. She lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters.
