No Matter How Far is a haunting, ultimately redemptive story inspired by my parents’ survival of the Holocaust. Avram Grynberg survived them all; Nazi occupation, the misery of ghetto life, Auschwitz, hard labor in Nazi coal mines, and a brutal death march. When liberation finally came, he went home to Lodz, Poland, to wait for others in his family to return. None came back.

After five months of mourning, a chance encounter with a woman survivor on the streets of post-war Lodz led Avram on a six-hundred-mile journey to Zeilsheim, a displaced persons camp outside Frankfurt, Germany, where he believed he would be reunited with his wife. Along the way, he had to deal with rigid Russian diplomats, thieves, thugs, and continued antisemitism, but nothing was going to stop him from his quest.

In No Matter How Far, you will feel what it was like to walk in my late father’s shoes during his arduous journey from hell on earth to redemption.
